(W06) Sickle Cell Disease: Global Impact and the Case for Partnerships Between Research Groups in Rich and Poor Countries

Friday, May 16, 2008: 7:00 AM-8:30 AM
The Duke Energy Center
The program will include presentations and discussion of the problems of sickle cell disease (SCD) in developing countries. This will include description of the incidence, clinical manifestations, and the remarkable clinical diversity of the disease and the gaps in our understanding of the relationship between genotype and phenotype. The need for research partnerships will be presented with reference to specific opportunities for research and needs for studies to improve the care and understanding of the clinical manifestations of SCD in low income countries.
