(W07) Translational Research: How NOT to Fall Between Bench and Bed

Saturday, May 17, 2008: 7:00 AM-8:30 AM
The Duke Energy Center
Definition. Translational research is an excellent career option for the MD with research interests (i.e., physician-scientist) who does not want to lose clinical skills. The combination of clinical thinking with bench work makes thinking “outside the box” more likely because research will remain more patient oriented or more patient based. Intramural resources. Each institution has their intramural translational protocol development that can be used as a structured framework by which the research can be guided toward practical drug development. Public-private partnerships. This is an alternative way to facilitate translation of novel therapeutic interventions. Nationwide resources. The NIH launched the Clinical and Translational Science (CTSA) Consortium in October 2006 to remove barriers between clinical and basic research. Explanation of its objectives and CTSA resources available will be provided at the workshop. Translational Research Core Services. The NIH RAID pilot program is intended to reduce some of the common barriers between laboratory discoveries and clinical trials for new therapies. The NIH rapid access to interventional development pilot program will be explained as a nationwide model for public resources available.
