W02 Thrombotic Complications in the NICU: Controversies and a Multidisciplinary Perspective

Wednesday, April 22, 2009: 7:30 PM-9:00 PM
Indigo Ballroom DH (Hilton San Diego Bayfront)
Therapeutic advances have led to increased recognition of thrombotic complications among critically ill neonates, the pediatric age group at highest risk. Although such clinical problems are among the most common reasons for consulting pediatric hematology/oncology, the specific location and sequelae of the thrombus and risk factors associated with it often lead to involvement of other subspecialty services. Such interactions offer opportunities to optimize care of these often complex patients via an integrated perspective. However, management controversies abound due to lack of evidence, with published guidelines even conflicting in some cases with respect to treatment versus observation. In this workshop experts from different pediatric subspecialties will review current approaches to diagnosis, management and prevention of specific thrombotic problems encountered in neonates and the most important clinical research questions to be addressed. An open panel discussion will follow. Such multidisciplinary interactions are likely necessary to further advance evidence-based care of these patients.
